BIOS
Altus Adventures is a company born out of a strong belief that Creation provides unparalleled opportunities for people to discover, learn and grow. With this belief, Nate and Mia Helweg began Altus Adventures as a way to work with at-risk youth for extended periods in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. Since then Altus Adventures has had the opportunity to work with various populations in as many settings but always with the express purpose of sharing their passion for Christ and their desire to see others grow through a purposeful pursuit of adventure in the outdoors.
Having cut their teeth in western Michigan leading and directing wilderness and adventure trips at Spring Hill Camps and working with Wedgwood Christian Services, Nate and Mia have committed themselves to providing exciting and meaningful adventure experiences in Michigan and beyond.

Nate Helweg
Nate earned his B.S. in Recreation Administration from Bowling Green State University, his M.S. Ed in Outdoor Teacher Education from Southern Adventist University, and his Ph D in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University. Besides running running Altus Adventures, Nate enjoys teaching graduate students as an adjunct professor.
Mia Helweg
As a kid, Mia would often put on a plaid shirt and play ‘mountain climber’ in the back yard. She finally got her chance to play for real, as part of Outward Bound’s Wilderness Leadership Semester, in 1992. Since then, she has earned a B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation from Calvin College and an M.S. Ed from Southern Adventist University. She developed an adventure program for SAMBICA Camp, which she directed for 7 years. Mia still plays mountain climber/skier/biker, whenever possible and loves being outdoors with Nate and their three boys.
